Prosecutors Secure Natural Life Sentence
For Heinous 2009 Murder Of Elderly Relative

A Maywood man charged with the brutal murder and robbery of his 81-year-old great aunt in her west suburban home in 2009 has been sentenced to natural life in prison, according to the office of Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez.

David Brown, 56, was previously convicted by a judge of First Degree Murder for the death of Gertrude Franklin, 81, who was brutally beaten and robbed by Brown in her LaGrange Park home.

According to prosecutors, Brown entered Franklin’s residence in the early morning hours of Oct. 19, 2009 and assaulted the victim by beating her in the head with a ceramic coffee mug.  He also used two neckties to bind the victim’s wrists and ankles.  Brown then took jewelry from the victim’s bedroom and the victim’s car keys before leaving the residence.

After the attack, as Brown was driving in Franklin’s car, a LaGrange Park police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop of the vehicle. Brown stopped the car briefly, opened the driver’s side door, then slammed the door and sped away.  The defendant later crashed the car into a tree near the victim’s residence and was subsequently arrested.

According to prosecutors, after Brown was arrested, police recovered the victim’s jewelry in the stolen vehicle.  The victim’s blood was later found on the defendant’s shoes.

Franklin sustained numerous injuries as a result of the attack including subdural hemorrhages in the brain, facial fractures, and contusions and lacerations on the head and scalp.  She died several weeks after the attack due to cranial cerebral injuries.

Cook County Judge Noreen Love convicted Brown in November and sentenced him to the natural life sentence during a hearing at the Maywood Courthouse late Wednesday.

State’s Attorney Alvarez thanked Assistant State’s Attorneys Jennifer Hanus and Russ Baker for their handling of the case as well as the LaGrange Park Police Department for their assistance.
